Affective Questions

"The affective questions can be helpful here because they let you turn the tables. You still address inappropriate behavior but in a way that asks students to think for themselves about their actions and to reflect on how they affect other people. That shifts responsibility away from you and places it on the other students whose behavior is causing the problems"  (Costello, Wachtel & Wachtel, 2009, p. 19).

Affective Language Reminders

"We should strive to express both pleasant and unpleasant feelings. We have repeatedly found that many students are completely unaware of the impact- positive and negative-that their behavior has on others" (Costello, Wachtel & Wachtel, 2009, p. 13.)
